The original varnish was polyester, 2 mm thick. Apparently the guitar was made of old furniture, since the central block inside the deck was made from a piece of very old mahogany. It had a characteristic smell and marks of a wood worm. After refinishing with shellac and replacing all metal parts and pickups, it sounded like a piano.
